China Pulp & Recycled Fiber Conference 2008 held in Shanghai


(CFI Shanghai April 2, 2008) China Pulp & Recycled Fiber Conference 2008, jointly organized by CFI Consulting Ltd. & China Forest & Paper Executive Club (CFPEC), was held on March 27-28 in Renaissance Hotel in Shanghai. 280 odds delegates from global suppliers, agents, recovered paper dealers, Chinese users and traders and others attended the one and half day event.

This is also the third session of the conference after CFI successfully created the venue first time in 2006. This year’s event has attracted supports and sponsoring from industry players such as Chenming Paper Group, Hunan Tiger, APP, C&D, FPP E-commerce, CMPC, CellMark and Westerlund Changshu Etc.

There are totally 15 keynote speakers doing presentations concerning the topic of fiber issues after Mr. Chen Hongguo, Chairman of CFPEC & Chairman of Chenming Paper, delivered welcome speech. Mr. Fan Jianping, the Division Chief of China State Economic Centre, forecasts China’s macro-economy in 2008 as “stable & fast growth‿but with some uncertainties like high inflation, heat fixed asset investment and mounding pressures on energy saving and pollution control.

Three major SA pulp suppliers, one each from Arauco, VCP & Suzano, elaborate their blue print for 2008 and beyond, and share audience with their experiences and lessons on how to obtain a sustainable development. Mr. Jimmy Lee, President & CEO of Mercer International, presented global NBSK market from his unique perspective. His view on the possible competition for wood between pulp producing and bio mass energy aroused delegates‿attention because this may means pulp prices hard to soften in the near future.

Mr. Wu Jialin, Chairman of Hunan Tiger Group, introduced how Tiger tackle the fiber issue. Tiger is the pioneer in Chinese paper manufacturers to solve fiber shortage by building pulp mills on own plantation and surrounding reed fibers as well as making best use of local recovered papers.

Four speakers touched recovered paper issues such as the trend of recovered paper market and the dynamic relationship with China’s paper industry etc. Two speakers each from CellMark & C&D spoke about the value of middle man in global and Chinese domestic pulp market. Speaker from PEFC, one of the two forestry certification systems in the world, introduced the importance why Chinese pulp and paper manufacturers should have their forest certified in a right way. Besides, Mr. Ulf Eriksen, Vice President of Star Shipping Shanghai, updated delegates the latest movements in global shipping market.

Roger Wright, Managing Director of Hawking Wright, elaborated global pulp market. His view on a possible over supply for BHKP in the near term aroused several questions and discussions. Finally, Mr. Xu Weidong, Chairman of CFI, shared his study with attendees concerning the positioning of China’s paper industry in global perspective, and some hot issues the industry is facing.
